Units may be promoted. A promotion is a rise in rank conferred by a higher authority on a Unit of a lower rank.

From lowest to highest, the ranks are:

Chief Warlord

A Unit may be promoted from any lower rank to any higher rank. It is not possible to be promoted above Chief Warlord, since the ony position higher is Overlord, and that position requiries a vacancy, in which case other rules concerning barbarian status are involved.

A barbarian Warlord may claim a City and thereby become an Overlord, but this is not a promotion, because the Warlord is resposnible for his or her own rise in rank, and the position is not granted by a higher authority.

Additional ranks may be limited to garrison units only. For example:

  • Henchman: "Henchman" is used as an honourific for low-rank unitsErf-b1-p4Same-site.PNG.
  • Lackey: Bogroll was promoted to Parson's lackeyErf-b1-p-p28Same-site.PNG, indicating that a Lackey is of higher rank than a Henchman.

See Unit for more details.
