LIAB Epilogue 21
|Vinny Doombats, wearing his special Message hat, is flying towards the City of Faq, three Skanks are heading towards him. The horizon is turning purple from the setting sun. Mountains can be seen in the distance, just above the huge, inward curving Outer Walls of the city. The city itself is made up of mushroom-like domed buildings with floating walkways connecting them above street level. There are a few leafless trees around the city. The central Tower is huge, spiked, and held up by a spiral column. One Megalogwiff and three Gwiffons are floating by it.|||
But day-to-day it pretty much meant he was just a guard dog for Don King's investment here. About every turn, someone or something would pop in Otoh or Kibo, and he'd fly out and assign them their duties. That was it. Other than bedding down with the Queen (when she was around-she'd been gone for a dozen turns now), there wasn't a lot of fun to be had, or many perks to this job.
But...it did come with a cool hat.
Bunny handled most of their communications, but the black leather cap was necessary for receiving items, especially the occasional gem. Vinny didn't usually like anything in his hair, but this thing fit him just perfect. Black bill, black leather braid, red Transylvito crest on the front. Yeah.
If and when he ever left this gig, he guessed he would miss Jillian first, the hat a close second, and...not much else.
He'd worn it to fetch the fresh-popped Megalo from Kibo, then flown back to the capital at sunset. The three Skanks met him at the tower top and fawned over him. Like they did. And as usual, he shrugged them off. For whatever reason, they had become the most boring part of this whole assignment.
As he slunk back to his quarters, alone, the hat rumbled.
|Inside the City of Faq's queen's quarters Vinny is holding a wine label with one eyebrow arched. He's wearing red boxers with Doombats on it and a white tank-top. His sleeping box is standing open at the foot of the bed, with two red slippers in front of it. Vinny's Message hat is on a desk, with a candelabra on the upper part illuminating the room.|||
Nothing else. No brags. No casualty reports. No questions or orders to relay...
Given that there was to have been a major battle today, perhaps for the fate of the world, Vinny found this slightly suspicious. He called Bunny, and got the real story. His jaw hit the floor. Slately gone, Spacerock fell to Gobwin Knob, and the Queen split the battle? And...
"You sure she's got Prince Ansom with here?"
"Vinny...that's prob'ly the only reason she went out there in the first place. Don'tcha think?" Bunny's voice in his head was sweet, but blunt. It was like taking a club to the skull, from the inside.
The other message came in long after midnight. Bleary-eyed, Vinny floated out of his sleeping box and conjured the scrap of paper.
