Proposed Canon
Novice-class is the starting proficiency of a caster, with rudimentary knowledge of a given discipline. All popped casters start as novices in their own discipline, with little or no skill in other disciplines except a few basic spells such as Hoboken or Powerball.
Casters who gain expertise and insight can advance to Adept-class; the circumstances and benefits of this graduation are as-yet unknown. Novice status does not have a direct relationship with level, but there are no known examples of casters who are still novices in their own discipline after level 3.
Speculation
When casters learn disciplines outside their own, they start as Novices in them.
