Caster proficiency: Novice – Adept – Master
Juice, also referred to as mana, is a term describing the mental energy that a unit uses to cast spells and certain forms of natural magic.Erf-b1-p104, Erf-b1-p125, Erf-b1-p129 All units have juice, but only casters are conscious of it.
A Caster can only spend a limited amount of this energy to cast spells on one turn.Erf-b1-p090 Juice replenishes at the start of a new turn; the amount received is considered a Turnamancy limit.Erf-b3-p287 It is possible that sleep aids a Caster in performing actual spells.Erf-b1-p084
It's possible for a spell to use several turns' worth of a single caster's juice – Vanna's turn-ending Kingworld spell cost that much.Erf-b2-p022 The mechanics of this are not fully clear, though; it's possible that the full reserve of a caster's juice is simply larger than the amount that gets replenished, but also this example could have been possible due to extra mechanics of the Arkendish link, or the spell could have been cast in segments across multiple turns.
Juice is (or can be) bound to Grandiocosmic Strings. Because of that, in some cases a Thinkamancer can use juice present on their string (a string they are connected with) from another source (such as another caster or a tower). Erf-b3-p179
Prisoners have their juice reserve paused – they are unable to use it while being imprisoned, but get to use it once repatriated.Hvs.tCF 202 The start-of-turn replenish doesn't happen while they are imprisoned.
According to Ivan Poe while linked into Big Think, Shockmancy is juice.Erf-b3-p267 The exact requirements have not been specified, but while linked to Ivan in a state 8.1 caster link, Big Think was able to absorb raw Shockmancy from a portal column to refuel their drained juice reserves.
Scrolls are a way to "store" juice for later use as casting scrolls do not seem to spend Caster's own juice.Erf-b1-p125, Erf-b1-p129 Casters create scrolls on their turn, for a significantly higher cost in juice than simply casting the same spell. Perhaps, like the Juice spent to replace Motion in Croakamancy spells, this extra juice is spent to put the spell in stasis.
Real World References
Juice is commonly used as slang for electric current.
It is also a reference to mana, which is frequently used as a mechanic in games to limit spell casting.
